Knowledge Base:

.308 Winchester came into production in 1952. It is a commercial center fire cartridge with a bullet diameter of 7.8mm. The .308 Winchester is the most common used game hunting cartridge throughout the world. Today the CMP holds target matches for .308 ammo with the M-14 rifle. The military version of the ammo is 7.62x51mm NATO and it’s used today by many soldiers in the world. The armory in any US military base is sure to have a selection of .308 rifles and ammo.

There are many types of .308 bullets for sale to the commercial market and some bullets that are designed for the military only. Hunters typically use a copper jacketed hollow point, or soft point round due to the expansion of the projectile on impact which creates a large wound channel. Police and military snipers favor the a heavy match hollow point when they need precision and accuracy. For general target practice the most common round is the military 147gr full metal jacket which can be bought at just about any sporting goods store in the US. There are some less common variants of the .308 bullet such as the armor piercing and frangible. Armor piercing .308 is listed as restricted by the ATF because the hardened steel core can penetrate light armor. Frangible rounds are made of compressed metal powder and used mainly for safety to stop ricochets and over penetration. .308 Winchester is highly able ammo for just about any shooting situation. In many ammunition sportsman's guide manuals there is loading data available for remanufacturing. The aim when buying surplus ammo is to make sure it was stored properly. Just because you find a deal that is cheaper than dirt doesn't mean that the ammo is safe to shoot in a firearm. Always consult with a gunsmith when you have a safety concern.

  1. 90 percent of ammo twice as expensive

Posted by gabe on 25th Jul 2010

I dont know how this guy does it, but this is the best tracer for the money on the internet... super bright orange spoting ammo, burns at least a hundred fifty yards, which is exceptional for the money... Thanks for offering such a decent price man
