Shot shell cartridges are commonly loaded with shot or slug. Most shotgun shells are designed to be fired from a smoothbore barrel, where accuracy and range is less important than power and cluster. For more accurate long range shooting it is recommended to use a rifled barrel. A rifled barrel will increase the accuracy of the shotgun, but makes it unsuitable for firing shot, as the rifling causes the shot to form a round hollow shape in flight.
