The .22-250 started as a custom wildcat cartridge. The original case was a .250 Savage necked down to fit a .224 bullet. .22-250 ammo is very similar to the .220 Swift cartridge, however, the 22-50 remington cartridge outperforms the .220 swift by about 100ft/s. 22-250 ammo is also easier to find as it is much more popular than the swift cartridge. This usually makes it a cheaper round. Also a smaller powder load means longer barrel life, this is important to high-volume shooters. 22-250 Remington ammo feeds well in box magazines due to it's rimless case design.
One of the first gunsmiths to forge a rifle chambered for 22-250 ammunition was Phil Sharpe in 1937, Phil Sharpe was a master gunsmith and had respectable experience building .220 Swift rifles, When comparing 220 swift with 220-250 Remington he stated, "The Swift performed best when it was loaded to approximately full velocity," whereas, "The Varminter case permits the most flexible loading ever recorded with a single cartridge. It will handle all velocities from 1,500ft/s up to 4,500ft/s.". It is that versatility that today still makes this a premium round for varmint hunting.
In 1963 Browning Arms Company chambered the Browning High Power Rifle for .22-250. Two years later Remington Arms adopted .22-250, and added "Remington" to the name. Their Model 700 and 40 XB match rifles were the first commercial rifles created by Remington. Remington Arms created an ammo line to work with the gun thus establishing its commercial name 22-250 Remington.
Due to the size and design of the 22-250 hunting is the typical task, however it has seen some military action. In the 1980s, in an attempt to reduce over penetration and ricochets, the 22-250 cartridge was adopted by the Australian Special Air Service for urban counter-terrorism duties.
22-250 Remington ammo is typically used for hunting varmint. 22-250 Remington has very low recoil and is very easy shoot, making it a preferred round for varmints by many hunters. Though it can be used for smaller deer or elk it is not recommended as the cartridge is a considered to small for this type of game. 22-250 Remington is effective at up to 400 yards and travels up to 3,800 ft/s making it a great round for that pesky groundhog or squirrel. Due to the velocity of the round it tends to be loud. Ear protection is recommended.
