5.7x28 History

The story of the five seven cartridge began when NATO requested to test and replace the standard 9mm cartridge. Originally designed by FN Herstal in Belgium for use in the FN P90 personal defense weapon the five seven cartridge was decided by NATO as a clear choice and all around a better cartidge than the 9mm. Some of the noted factors in their decion was better performance in adverse weather conditions, 27% greater effectiveness on unprotected targets and equal effectiveness on protected targets. Another key factor in NATO's decision was it's similarities in diameter to 5.56 ammo thus allowing it to be manufactured in exsisting factory lines. Despite this steller evaluation the German delegation rejected the standard and had it indefinatly halted.

5.7x28 Uses

The five seven cartridge is known to be a very accurate high velocity round. Originally it was restricted to Law enforcement, military and tactical orginizations. In 2004 civilians gained access to the IOM five seven pistol and 5.7x28 ammo. Though this round was originally designed for personal protection, it is now a fast growing sporting cratridge. In 2009 the NRA added 5.7x28mm firearms to their Tactical Police Compittion stadards. Now many law enforcement agencys compete with 5.7x28 pistols.
